THE RIGHT FIT – Premier Darrell Pasloski, left, wrote a letter to the Star yesterday indicating that he believes Conservative candidate Ryan Leef would make the best Member of Parliament for the territory at this time. Melissa Atkinson right.

Premier formally endorses Leef’s re-election

Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski is wearing his opinion on his sleeve.

By Aimee O'Connor on October 14, 2015

Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski is wearing his opinion on his sleeve.

“I personally believe that Ryan Leef is our best choice for Yukon’s MP,” Pasloski told the Star Tuesday.

The Conservative candidate for Monday’s federal election, Pasloski said, has “delivered results” during his last four years in the House of Commons.

“To many, this will come as no surprise, given my past political role,” the premier said.

Leef’s economic beliefs go hand-in-hand with those of the Yukon Party government, he added.

For Pasloski, infrastructure investments like the Next Generation Hydro Project are priorities for the territory – and a candidate who supports those investments is favourable.

Over the course of the election campaign, Leef has been at the helm with other Conservative Party members for several Yukon-tailored investments.

Examples are a primary reserve unit for the Canadian Armed Forces, a year-round cadet facility and an expanded Junior Ranger program.

These, Pasloski said, are things that the territory has been pushing toward for a while.

Leef’s allegiance to representing the territory is another aspect that Pasloski believes sets him apart from the other candidates.

While MP, Leef put forth a private member’s bill that would amend the Criminal Code to better treat people affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Most notably for Pasloski, Leef’s defence of the Yukon’s stance on calling a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women spoke volumes, as the only Conservative MP to vote in favour of the motion.

Even with the positive aspects in mind, Leef has been the target of criticisms and verbal onslaught at recent forums with other federal candidates for the Yukon from audience members and candidates alike.

While it is within people’s rights to voice their opinions, Pasloski said, “there aren’t many people at such forums who haven’t decided who they’re voting for.”

For New Democratic Party candidate Melissa Atkinson, the premier’s endorsement is not exactly surprising.

“I suppose it’s to be expected,” Atkinson told the Star this morning.

What’s odd, Atkinson said, is the succession of events.

In August, the Yukon Party sent an email to its members, encouraging them to volunteer for the Conservative candidate’s election campaign – with a disclaimer.

“Part of the Yukon Party’s identity is that we are not affiliated with any federal party,” the email stated.

Atkinson noted that when Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Whitehorse last month, Harper put the blame on Pasloski’s shoulders for the controversial amendments that were made to a hot-button piece of legislation, Bill S-6.

“Why is it that the prime minister of our country is so willing to throw Pasloski under the bus?” Atkinson asked.

“And then have (Pasloski) come forward and say, ‘I’m endorsing their candidate.’”

There are, however, distinct ties between the two parties – Pasloski himself ran as the Conservative candidate in the 2008 federal election.

Yukon Senator Dan Lang was previously a Yukon Party politician before being appointed to the Senate in 2009.

The Yukon Party was originally called the Yukon Territorial Progressive Conservative Party when party politics began in the territory in 1978.

“Those correlations can be drawn,” Pasloski said, before adding that similar ties exist in other political parties.

“I am representing myself; this is Darrell speaking. I can’t separate Darrell from ‘premier,’” he said.

Leef, on the other hand, is both pleased and grateful for the premier’s endorsement.

“I think it clearly illustrates the strength of partnership formed between the Yukon government and the Government of Canada,” Leef said.

“We’ve really delivered clear results for the Yukon, particularly in the last four years.”

Another possible area of concern for Leef’s re-election campaign is the result from a recent election poll that surveyed nearly 500 Yukoners.

It had Liberal candidate Larry Bagnell at the top, followed by Atkinson, then Leef.

The poll was sponsored by Leadnow, an organization with aims to dislodge the Conservative government.

“Polls don’t determine elections, people do. I don’t put a lot of credence into that,” Pasloski said.

The territory historically has generally seen good voter turnout, Pasloski noted – and polling results, even at the federal level, change as election day draws nearer and nearer.

Bagnell and Green Party candidate Frank de Jong were not available for comment before press deadline this afternoon.

Pasloski will be gone next year. If only we could get rid of Danny Lang as well, but for that we need to abolish the senate. Pasloski has the same style as Stevie, all under the table and total lack of transparency. We will take the Yukon back, as we did with Canada.

Yukon's economy has always followed the price of minerals regardless of who's in charge.
Just remember who is currently signing deals with China & others regarding our Canadian economic rights and JOBS, Bill-C51's attack on Canadian rights, etc.......

Well if anyone doubted the ideological ties between the Yukon Party and the Conservative Party.... you can put those to bed. Yukon Party officially endorses the vigilante candidate. I guess they also endorse the endless attack ads by the Conservative party. The old saying remains true, birds of a feather, flock together.

Bud McGee, you epitomize the Harper Conservative mentality and belief that Canadians can be bought. Just put 'cash in people's pockets', and they will vote for you. Well Bud, do what you need to do. The fact is most of us care about the future of our country and what we leave behind for the kids more than we care about Harper 'putting cash in our pockets'.

But even to address that, as someone who is currently under 58 years old, dear Harper took two years worth of OAS cheques right out of my pocket by increasing the age to 67, from 65. Something the Liberals say they will reverse. Of course Harper and his Cons did not touch the age eligibility for their own $100,000 a year plus pension plan, which kicks in at 55 years old.

Fact is, Harper isn't putting any 'cash in my pocket', and even if he were it would not make up for his FIPA deal with china, where he gave away a lot of our sovereignty in a secret deal, signed in Russia no less. And it would not make up for his removing protection from fish, to 'fisheries', and withdrawing protection from almost all of our rivers and lakes. It would not make up for his further criminalization of marijuana and the millions of good Canadian citizens who enjoy a bit of pot instead of poisoning themselves with booze. Not to mention that his ridiculous stance costs us billions in drug wars, court costs, policing and jails, all the while making real criminals very rich, instead of putting tens of millions of dollars a year into government coffers.

I'll just stop there Bud McGee. But being a 'conservative' to me means not taking away people's freedoms without a very good reason. It also means not stealing from the children's future in order to put 'cash in your pocket' today. You should rethink what side you are on.

hey Bud...no freakin' doubt eh?
This place has morphed into a leftist utopia and there are many folks near peeing themselves at that possibility.
Wonder what the plan for their glee & euphoria might be...if, despite all the media cheer leading Stevie and his crew pull off another...majority?
Then bud, folks as we will be doing the peeing...from uncontrollable laughter.

How is supporting taking away the Yukons final say on environmental reviews giving us strong representation? I guess just ignore stuff like that, right Darell?
And Danny Lang was a realtor prior to being appointed to the senate.

All you left-wingers here are super giddy at the prospect of Leef and Pasloski losing elections. Say you all are right. Then what? What would the next day after look like? Hugging trees doesn't put cash in peoples' pockets or food on the table. I have heard nothing, if anything, about how the other parties are going to get the Yukon economy moving again.

I want to know if the Yukon people will retain the gym equipment that Ryan has set up in his office in Ottawa? I've seen it on TV. Are those dumbbells, universal machine and punching bag the taxpayer's, or did we just pay for the shipment?

I wonder if anyone is responsible for inventorying all the stuff in Leef's Office. Not that I'm implying anything but it would be good if the new MP at least had a desk to work at.

As for the endorsement, "economic beliefs go hand in hand with those of the Yukon Party", what's that plan? Pull all our economic policies into being an energy/ resource power, and then wonder why our unemployment is so high? This has been a disaster as a federal policy, and to have Darrell support it shows what little understanding Darrell and the Yukon Party have on economics.

Its been a long time since i've seen the entire electorate despise a sitting government as much as we seem to despise Pasloski..John Ostashek in '92, he lost the re-election and in 2000 lost it all..his seat..everything..Liberals got him then too.. I would like to see Paslowski lose it all..he does not deserve the gold plated pension he would get if somehow, a miracle occurs and he gets reelected. None of them, especially Paslowski, Graham, Nixon, Taylor, Kent, Cathers, Hassard, McLeod, and Elias..deserve a penny of public money..they have done such a poor job of it.

Well.. Larry.. Paslowski's endorsement of Leef kinda guarantee's you a nice win.

Next election Paz could see a lot less small 'c' Tory votes because of this endorsement as a whole lot of small 'c' conservative types are not going for Leef/Harper this election. Not a wise political move on his part as those votes will probably go to our Yukon NDP.

it don't surprise ol' Josey to see the Premier exercise some more really bad judgment. When the liberals form the majority government, ol' Darrel just put us all in a bad way. In my 5 decades or more, I've seen lots, and the good news is after Leef is voted out, so will the Yukon Party.

It merely demonstrates how he also deserves to be ousted from office. Do you remember when Colin Powell switched allegiance from Bush Jr to Obama purely on a matter of conscience as to what was better for the constituency rather than just 'keeping on good terms with the boss'? Well for one brief microsecond Paslowski had the opportunity to show some similar true conviction. He failed.
